Historical Background

Starting in 1820, U.S. law required that captains of vessels from a foreign country arriving in U.S. ports provide lists of passengers aboard. This database contains transcripts created from passenger lists for vessels that arrived in New Orleans. The transcripts were created through the Work Projects Administration's Louisiana Division of Professional and Service Projects.

What You Can Find in the Records

These transcripts include the following details:

  • ship name
  • passenger name
  • arrival date
  • port of embarkation

Transcripts may also include the captain’s name. Some records may also predate 1820. Though this is the date when passenger lists were required by law, some captains kept lists before then.
