Historical Background
In 1846, a dispute over the Texas-Mexico border brought the United States and Mexico to war. The U.S. won that war, the border dispute, and with it much of what is now the American southwest—more than 500,000 square miles stretching from Texas to California.
Compiled Military Service Records (CMSRs)
This database contains Compiled Military Service Records (CMSRs) for men mustered into the U.S. armed forces between 1846 and 1848. CMSRs are collections of cards that include details about a soldier that have been abstracted from records such as muster rolls; payrolls; rank rolls; inspection, provision, and clothing returns; receipts for pay and bounty; accounts for subsistence, pay, rations, clothing, and ordnance; abstracts of muster and pay rolls; and correspondence.
What You May Find in the Records
Details in these records can indicate that a soldier was present or absent at a certain place and time. Other cards may list date of enlistment and discharge, amount of bounty paid, wounds received during battle or hospitalization for injury or illness. The soldier's place of birth may be included, and a CMSR may contain an internal jacket for so-called "personal papers" of various kinds. These may include a copy of the soldier's enlistment papers, papers relating to his capture and release as a prisoner of war, or a statement that he had no personal property with him when he died. Note, however, that a CMSR rarely indicates battles in which a soldier fought; that information must be derived from other sources.
