Historical Background

HeHalutz (The Pioneer) was an Jewish youth movement founded in 1905 (in both American and Russia) with the goal to train its members to settle in the Land of Israel. Following World War I, the movement spread all over Europe and overseas. It reached its peak between 1930 and 1935 and had around 100,000 members. Their agricultural training centers (hakhsharot) were an important part of preparing members for pioneering life in the Land of Israel.
