About Salt Lake County, Utah, U.S., Deaths, 1847-1949

General collection information

This collection contains an index of county death records from Salt Lake County, Utah between 1847 and 1949. All records are in English. Death records from Utah are accessible to the public 50 years after the death occurred.

Using this collection

Records in the collection may include the following:

  • Name
  • Birth date and place
  • Death date
  • Parents’ names
  • Spouse’s name
  • Cause of death
  • Burial location
  • These records were registered by the county where the death occurred, not where the person resided; so if you can’t find a record, consider checking the counties surrounding your family member’s home. If you know your family member’s religious affiliation, try searching local church records. Many churches recorded burial information. Checking the obituary section of local newspapers may also be a good place to research.

These records are not death certificates, however; they contain information that make finding death certificates easy. If you want an official copy of a certificate, they can be purchased at VitalChek.

    Collection in context

Salt Lake City was founded by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, who started collecting vital records upon its inception in 1847. These are some of the earliest records available in Utah as county clerks didn’t begin registering deaths until 1898. Utah began recording deaths on a statewide level in 1904.

In 1933, the U.S. government began to require the civil registration of deaths on a federal level.
