Many Jews from Romania, Hungary, and Poland boarded a ship known as the Mefkure at the port of Constanta, Romania on August 5, 1944 with the intention of traveling to Israel. When the ship was about 25 miles northeast of Igneada, Turkey, they were attacked. Any survivors were shot while struggling in the water. Only 11 people survived. Nobody knows exactly who attacked the ship. A monument was built to the memory of those who were murdered, and is located in Giurgiului Cemetery south of Bucharest. This collection contains about 300 names from this monument as well as age and last residence.
