On July 30, 1943, 86 Jews from Auschwitz were sent to Natzweiler-Struthof in Alsace, France to be used for "research purposes" by the Nazi doctor August Hirt. After they arrived, they were murdered in a gas chamber and their bodies were preserved in formalin. When the Allied troops approached the area, the bodies were hidden deep in the basement of the Anatomy Institute. They were eventually discovered and research was conducted to determine their identities using their numbers. This collection contains the names, birth years and places, nationality, and last residence of these victims. In November of 2005, the remains of these individuals were removed to the Jewish cemetery of Cronenbourg, on the outskirts of Strasbourg.
