In May of 1945, the German officials in Hamburg and its concentration camp, Neuengamme, decided to purge all evidence of their actions. Their plan was to move about 7,000 prisoners to the nearby port of Lübeck, load them into several old ships, and sink them in the Baltic Sea. On May 3, 1945, with the ships loaded and ready to sail, misunderstanding them to be German transports, the British bombed them.
This collection contains the names of approximately 1,200 victims who died on the day of the attack, or shortly afterwards in medical facilities. Some of the records contain the person's name, date of birth, place of birth, and death information.
